Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ 1

Can I give spare tickets to somebody else to use?

Please do not give away or resell tickets as they are all individually named, and the organisers have emergency contact details for the purchasers. The event takes place on a hillside in the dark, so we are being extra careful about safety. We need to be able to contact ticket holders quickly in case of a late change of event plans or an emergency.

FAQ 2

Will the event go ahead if the weather is bad?
The organisers will be meeting on Hoad Hill at 10am on Saturday 30th March, to review the weather and the ground conditions. The event will proceed only if it is safe to do so. If for any reason the event has to be cancelled, then we will contact ticket purchasers immediately by email, and will also publish information on this website, Facebook, etc.

FAQ 3

What should I wear?
On the assumption that it could be wet and windy, you should wear something waterproof and warm. Some sections of the path may be muddy and slippy, so wear sturdy walking shoes or boots. Please do not bring umbrellas, as they will probably be unuseable in the wind, and could injure somebody nearby.

FAQ 4

Can I just watch the event without paying?

Yes you can. It's similar to the lantern procession, where you can pay a small charge to help cover costs and take part with your friends and family, or you can pay nothing and just watch. Either way is fine. To anyone who is not participating, could you please try to avoid using the main paths up the front of the hill between 7pm and 9pm on the 30th March, so that we can get everyone up and down the hill safely. We'd suggest you watch from the canal tow path, Croftlands Park, Birkrigg, or anywhere else around town where you can see the front of Hoad Hill. The choice is yours. Note that all public rights of way on the hill will remain open to the public throughout the event.
