Instructions

Please assemble in the Ford Park area from about 6:45pm onwards. Visit the scarecrow festival in the walled garden, buy a hot drink, and listen to Drum Nation playing.

Entry to the hill from Hoad Lane starts at 7:15pm, by ticket (purchased in advance). Please be ready to show your ticket there. Note that tickets are now SOLD OUT.

About 400 people will line the zig-zag grass path up the front of Hoad Hill, from the entrance gate to the top. Please spread yourselves out along the path. Stewards will assist.

A flat area at the bottom will be marked with green and white flags for ticket holders who don't want to climb the hill.

Bring a torch, head torch, LED glow stick, etc. No flames please. All children will be given an LED baton light to use on the hill and then to take home afterwards, free of charge.

The path and the monument will be lit up from about 8pm. The monument will be open for visitors until 9pm.

Help us to ensure that residents and businesses are not inconvenienced, and that access is maintained to properties in Ford Park and Hoad Lane.

If you don't have a ticket, we recommend that you watch from a distance. Birkrigg Common should provide an excellent view. The canal tow path or Croftlands Park would be great if you want to be a bit closer.

What to do

  1. To avoid traffic congestion, please walk to the event or park in the town centre car parks if you can.

  2. Parking is also available in the grounds of Ford Park, subject to weather.

  3. The event control is in Ford Park Coach House, including lost property, lost children, and first aid.

  4. Children aged 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

  5. Hot drinks may be purchased at Ford Park. Please put litter in the bins provided.

  6. Toilets will be provided at Ford Park.

  7. Please bring a torch to help light up Hoad. That's the whole point!

  8. No fireworks, sparklers, or any other form of fire or explosives please.

  9. We don't recommend that you take a dog onto the hill, as they may present a tripping hazard for others.

  10. No alcohol or recreational drugs please. This is a family event.

  11. Photography is encouraged. Please take as many photos as you like and share on social media.

  12. Do not fly a drone. There will be an official safety drone flying, which has an infra-red camera - do not get in its way!

  13. Wear suitable clothing and footwear. The event uses the grass path up the front of the hill, which can get slippy.

  14. Show your tickets at the Hoad Lane entrance to Hoad Hill (behind the Ford Park Coach House).

  15. Follow the path up the hill marked with the red/white flags. Please be patient with people walking slowly.

  16. If you are unable to climb the path, please remain in the area at the foot of the hill marked with green/white flags.

  17. Attendees with prams, pushchairs, or wheelchairs should go to the green/white flagged area.

  18. If you need help, ask the nearest steward, or go to a SAFETY sign and follow the instructions on the sign.

  19. Please follow instructions from stewards, and listen for instructions via megaphones.
